Mechanical Properties and Mass-Based Characteristics of Biochar–Concrete according to the Cement Replacement Ratio of Wood-Based Biochar

초록

As global carbon dioxide emissions continue to increase, research is critically focused on improving the environment and advancing carbon sequestration methods. The construction industry is exploring biochar, a char produced by pyrolyzing biomass, as a sustainable material for reducing carbon emissions. Biochar, with its high carbon content and porous structure, is promising for carbon sequestration. This study investigates the potential of concrete mixed with biochar as a construction material by reducing cement usage. Considerably, the mechanical (slump, air content, and compressive strength) and mass-based (water absorption, density, and porosity) properties of concrete mixtures with partial cement replacement by biochar were evaluated. Cement replacement ratios of 0%, 5%, and 10% were tested. Reportedly, the slump decreased as the biochar content increased owing to the water absorption and retention capabilities of the biochar. SEM analysis confirmed porous structure of biochar, which led to higher air content and water absorption rates as the cement replacement ratio grew, caused by the formation of voids in the concrete. The highest values of compressive strength and specific strength were observed at a 5% cement replacement ratio of biochar, demonstrating the potential of using biochar as a carbon sequestration material in construction.
