초록

Purpose: This study aims to examine the historical development of the Jinju Commercial High School ssireum team and to analyze the structural significance of community-based school sports organizations in the evolution of Korean ssireum. Methods: A variety of historical sources—including documents related to the Jinju Commercial High School ssireum team, newspaper articles, and interviews with key figures from the time—were collected and contextually analyzed to trace institutional changes, organizational practices, and interpersonal networks across different periods. Results: The Jinju Commercial High School ssireum team rapidly rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s through its strong connection with Jinju Nam Middle School. After a period of decline, the team successfully reestablished itself in the 2000s through leadership renewal, reconstruction of the youth development system, and a philosophical shift in training. Conclusion: The team represents a structural achievement forged through the interaction of local community, school education, and traditional folk sport. This case demonstrates how community-based school organizations can contribute to the sustainability and modern transmission of indigenous sports like ssireum.
