Since the National Police Agency declared 2015 as the inaugural year for victim protection, the role of police officers responsible for the protection and support of crime victims has become increasingly important over the past decade. To enhance the function of victim protection and the role of victim support officers in the future, it is necessary to diagnose and find solutions for the psychological experiences and mental health issues of the officers carrying out these responsibilities. This study aims to understand the work and mental health status of victim support police officers, who are recruited as specialists in victim psychology. It involves interviewing 10 victim support police officers using Grounded Theory, a qualitative research method highly regarded in the social sciences, and analyzing the data collected. The analysis of the interview data revealed that victim support police officers with a background in psychology struggled to adapt due to the heterogeneous culture of the police organization after joining the force and continuously experienced psychological conflicts. However, it was found that adaptive victim support police officers improved their job satisfaction and adaptation to the police organization by enhancing their personal capabilities and improving victim-related work. Based on these findings, the study proposes improvements to victim protection and support work to enhance job satisfaction for victim support police officers and establish a systematic approach to victim-related tasks. These results are expected to contribute to the enhancement of the personal and professional functions of victim support police officers, as well as to future recruitment, management, and related institutional improvements for these officers.
