This study examines the applicability of trademark data as a dynamic leading indicator reflecting regional economic self-sustainability in order to complement the limitations of population-centered static indicators of regional extinction. Existing regional extinction risk indices are primarily calculated based on the ratio of women of childbearing age to the elderly population, thereby failing to sufficiently reflect regional industrial structures and the dynamics of economic activities. Accordingly, this study collected and analyzed trademark data from Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, and conducted a value chain analysis linking the Nice Classification with the Korean Standard Industrial Classification (KSIC). In addition, comparative analyses with regional statistical data and in-depth interviews with local stakeholders were conducted to verify the policy applicability of trademark data. The analysis revealed that trademark data in Namhae-gun formed an industrial linkage structure centered on agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, extending into manufacturing and accommodation and food service industries. In particular, regional agricultural and fishery specialties were found to expand into higher value-added industries through processing and branding, demonstrating the latent growth potential of the local economy that is difficult to capture through conventional population indicators alone. In contrast, trademark activities in distribution, cultural, and service sectors appeared relatively weak, while the lack of local processing and manufacturing infrastructure was identified as a major constraint on industrial advancement. Furthermore, although the accommodation and food service sector accounted for a high proportion of businesses and employees, its level of branding remained relatively low, highlighting the need to strengthen the qualitative competitiveness of the local tourism industry. This study is significant in that it empirically demonstrates that trademark data can function as a supplementary policy indicator for diagnosing industrial structures and economic self-sustainability in regions at risk of extinction. Furthermore, it suggests that establishing an industrial ecosystem that integrates regional branding with the expansion of processing and manufacturing infrastructure should be regarded as a key policy task in responding to regional extinction.
