Effect of root-zone temperature on resource redistribution and centellosides accumulation in Centella asiatica under vertical farming

Centella asiatica L. Urban (C. asiatica) is a stoloniferous medicinal herb valued for centelloside production. In this study, we examined how root-zone temperature (RZT) affects growth, physiology, mineral nutrient partitioning, and centelloside accumulation in C. asiatica grown at 25 degrees C, with RZT controlled at 10 degrees C (LRT), 20 degrees C (NRT), and 30 degrees C (WRT). LRT severely inhibited root development, water status, mineral nutrient accumulation, gas exchange, chlorophyll status, and shoot growth. However, anthocyanin, asiaticoside, and madecassoside concentrations increased under LRT. NRT maintained stable root development, water relations, and photosynthetic performance, but resulted in the lowest centelloside accumulation. Under WRT, root development was restricted, whereas shoot biomass and photosynthetic rate were maintained. Warm RZT increased the root-to-shoot mobility of Mg, Fe, and P, indicating altered nutrient partitioning rather than improved nutrient uptake. This nutrient distribution pattern was associated with sustained shoot function and increased centelloside accumulation under WRT. Although suboptimal RZT increased centelloside concentrations, only WRT enhanced total centelloside yield by maintaining shoot growth, suggesting its potential for short-term centelloside-enriched C. asiatica production in vertical farming systems.
