야마노쿠치 바쿠 문학에 있어서의 ‘조선’

Studies on Korea in the literature of Yamanokuchi Baku have recently begun in South Korea. This paper has questions about studies that examine Baku after placing him at the borderline between colony and empire, and examines the representation of Korea in the entire body of his literature. The works examined are two poems, three novels, and one essay. Several other novels in which Koreans appear but were not confirmed to have addressed national issues were only used as reference materials. Through the analysis, it could be seen that Baku encompassed not only colonial Koreans but also Japanese and criticized and satirized them as an absurd reality. Furthermore, it could be confirmed that he struggled to reveal his identity as an Okinawan poet instead of concealing it, both in his literature and in his real life. This paper argues that other misunderstandings that occurred in previous studies stemmed from his indirect and satirical writing style along with the characteristics of the times, which were before the war. It concluded that Baku’s literary orientation, which he himself expressed as “his own style,” originated from his desire to reject the reality as life and pursue a lofty spirituality, and that this also coincided with the characteristics of the Rekitei school to which he belonged.
