Artistic Structure and Aesthetic Significance of Jindo Bukchum

초록

This study explores the artistic structure and aesthetic significance of Jindo Bukchum, a traditional Korean drum dance that uniquely integrates percussion performance and choreographic movement. Unlike other Korean folk dances that rely solely on dance gestures, bukchum fuses music and movement to generate a dynamic visual and auditory experience, offering a form of energetic expression unparalleled in other traditions. Among these, Jindo Bukchum, developed by designated intangible cultural heritage bearer Park Byung-cheon (1933–2007), exemplifies the integration of music(ak), dance(mu) ,and performance(ga), and is characterized by complex drumming patterns, expressive gestures, and the evocation of shinmyung—a state of ecstatic immersion unique to Korean aesthetics. The analysis reveals that Jindo Bukchum employs gradually accelerating rhythmic structures and improvisational techniques to stimulate audience engagement and shared emotional experience. The dance embodies philosophical principles such as the harmony of yin and yang, tension and release, and strength and softness, and incorporates traditional compositional features including daesam–sosam rhythmic structures, bound and unbound movement, and spatial trajectories reflecting the taegeuk and five-directional(obang) layouts. These elements contribute to a distinctive Korean dance vocabulary rooted in natural cyclicality, spatial balance, and ritual sensibility. Ultimately, Park Byung-cheon's Jindo Bukchum transcends its folk origins to become a highly developed artistic tradition that exemplifies Korea's intangible cultural heritage. This research underscores the need for broader international recognition and scholarly dissemination of its aesthetic and philosophical value.
