A Longitudinal Analysis of the Acquisition of Japanese Evidential and Modal Expressions ‘yo-da’ and ‘mitaida’ by Chinese Learners: Focusing on Developmental Trajectories and Functional Distributions

초록

This study conducted a longitudinal analysis of how the expressions ‘yo-da’ and ‘mitaida’ are acquired in the actual learning process, using a natural-spoken corpus of Chinese learners of Japanese. The analysis produced the following findings: (1)In conversations with an unfamiliar interviewer during the initial learning stage, the proportion of ‘yo-da’ was relatively high; as learning progressed, however, the proportion of ‘mitaida’ increased. Nevertheless, ‘yo-da’ remained more frequent overall than ‘mitaida’. (2)While the part of speech that collocates with ‘yo-da’ varies depending on the learning stage and its position (preversus post-predicative), ‘mitaida’ overwhelmingly collocates with nouns in both positions. (3)Among Chinese learners of Japanese, the properties of the nouns that combine with ‘yo-da’ and ‘mitaida’ vary according to both the learning stage and the position of attachment. (4)‘yo-da’ was used exclusively in sentence-medial position at every stage, whereas ‘mitaida’ appeared both sentence-finally and sentence-medially. (5)A grammatical item’s role as a central axis and its expressive flexibility (versatility) are not inevitably interconnected.
