A Comparative Study on Structural Detailed Design for Ships and Offshore Structures

초록

Offshore structures were subject to stricter and more conservative design criteria than ships because they operate in harsher environments. Nevertheless, structural engineers often misapply ship-based design standards to offshore projects because of a lack of understanding of the differences, leading to significant financial losses and project delays. This study examined the structural differences between ships and offshore units by analyzing classification rules and performing FE analyses of details, including fillet welding, tapers, drain holes, slot holes, and end brackets. The results suggest that for fillet welding, DNV-OS requires a leg length approximately 18% larger than DNV-SHIP regulations for a 30mm plate thickness because of the higher welding factors. Regarding the taper ratios, applying the offshore standard (4:1) reduced stress by 2.1% and increased the fatigue life by 6.9% compared to the ship standard (3:1). In structural details, the offshore-specific drain hole reduced the stress at the weld toe by approximately 48.9% compared to the hole of the ship. These findings provide practical guidelines to improve structural safety and design quality in offshore engineering.
