A Qualitative Case Study of a Female Client with Depressive Disorder's Self-Talk Transformation Process: Focusing on Transactional Analysis Counseling

초록

This study explored the process through which negative self-talk is transformed into positive self-talk in female clients diagnosed with depressive disorder, using transactional analysis counseling. It also examined how these changes influenced emotional recovery and self-acceptance. Six female clients aged 20 years and older, all diagnosed with major depressive disorder, participated in 10 to 16 counseling sessions. Following the completion of counseling, each participant engaged in two to three in-depth interviews. Data were collected from counseling records and interview transcripts. Using qualitative case study methods, the the analysis identified three major thematic domains prior to counseling: a dysfunctional upbringing and the onset of negative self-talk, life pressures and the normalization of negative self-talk, and existential denial and the entrenchment of negative self-talk. After counseling, three corresponding domains of change emerged: life change through counseling and the emergence of positive self-talk, the routinization of positive self-talk in a transformed life, and hope for the future and consolidation of positive self-talk. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
