Factors Associated with Unmet Healthcare Needs among Young Adults Living Alone: Analysis of the 2022 Community Health Survey

초록

This study examined factors associated with unmet healthcare needs among young adults living alone, using Andersen’s Behavioral Model as an analytic framework. Data from 7,188 individuals aged 19–39 years who participated in the 2022 Community Health Survey were analyzed using complex sample logistic regression. Independent variables included predisposing (sex, educational level, marital status), enabling (income level, basic livelihood security recipients), and need factors (smoking, drinking, physical activity, self-rated health, sleep duration, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms). Overall, 5.4% of participants reported unmet healthcare needs. Women were more likely to experience unmet healthcare needs, and among need factors, never-smokers and ex-smokers had a lower likelihood compared with current smokers. Better self-rated health was associated with reduced risk, whereas sleeping fewer than 6 hours per day and experiencing high levels of stress increased the likelihood of unmet needs. Depressive symptoms demonstrated a dose–response relationship, with mild, moderate, and severe symptoms each linked to progressively higher odds of unmet healthcare needs. These findings indicate that unmet healthcare needs among young adults living alone are closely related to mental health status and health behaviors, underscoring the importance of strengthening youth-centered mental health support systems, expanding smoking cessation interventions, and developing tailored policies to reduce unmet healthcare needs in this population.
