Improving Coolant System Design to Enhance Machine Tool Reliability

초록

Purpose: Cutting fluids used in machining processes contain fine sludge that can damage machine tools . This study aims to enhance machine tool reliability and operational efficiency by improving the coolant tank structure to prevent sludge sedimentation. Methods: The coolant tank was designed with a hopper-shaped structure to create agitation, keeping the sludge suspended in the cutting fluid, which was then directed for discharge through a cyclone filter. Computational fluid dynamics was used to determine the optimal nozzle positions for effective flow and agitation. Results: A prototype was fabricated and tested under conditions simulating actual equipment operation, achieving approximately 95% sludge removal efficiency. Conclusion: This study presents an effective method to prevent sludge sedimentation, which is expected to improve the durability of machine tools. Additionally, it is anticipated to enhance machining precision, extend the replacement cycle of cutting fluids, and reduce maintenance costs.
