The History and Landscape Characteristics of Hansongjeong in Gangneung

초록

Hansongjeong (寒松亭) in Gangneung has long been celebrated as a major scenic site of the Gwandong region, yet its landscape qualities have seldom been examined in depth. This article traces the pavilion’s historical development, identifies the elements that shaped its scenic value, and considers its representation in classical Chinese poetry. From the late Goryeo to early Joseon period, Hansongjeong held significant prestige and attracted visits from high-ranking officials. Its prominence declined in the late Joseon era as the “Eight Scenic Views of Gwandong” (關東八景) became established, and repeated fires eventually led to its disappearance by the eighteenth century. Hansongjeong’s earlier fame was supported by cultural and geographical factors: relics linked to the Four Immortals of Silla, the musical piece Hansongjeonggok (寒松亭曲), the scenic beauty of Lake Pungho (楓湖), and several nearby notable sites. These elements kept its memory alive even after the pavilion ceased to exist. Poets across periods visited the site and composed han-si about it. Among them, Ahn Chuk’s (1287–1348) poem became especially influential, inspiring numerous later responses, though writers ultimately produced a diverse body of works reflecting varied perspectives. By presenting an overview of Hansongjeong’s history, scenic components, and literary reception, this study provides a foundation for further research into its cultural significance and its role within the broader landscape tradition of the Gwandong region.
