안수산에 관한 한미 양국 공론 비교: 한국과 미국의 언론 보도를 중심으로

초록

This paper compares the public opinions of both countries by analyzing the Korean and American media that reported Susan Ahn Cuddy, a figure who has contributed to the progress of American history through personal achievements by overcoming gender discrimination and racism that prevailed in American society in the mid- 20th century. Susan Ahn Cuddy was born the eldest daughter of Dosan Ahn Chang-ho and Lee Hye-ryeon, who were the first Korean couple to immigrate. She was the first Asian American woman to serve as a naval gunnery officer, a U.S. Navy code-breaker team captain, and a National Security Agency code-breaker team manager. After her retirement, she contributed to the social integration of the U.S. as multiethnic countries throughout her life by promoting civic participation of Korean Americans and helping to develop communities by serving as a bridge between their communities. Susan Ahn Cuddy’s historicity is revealed through various awards and media reports that illuminate it, not only during her lifetime but also after her death. The U.S. media has consistently revealed that Susan Ahn Cuddy is a significant figure in U.S. history through timely reports from World War II to the present. On the other hand, most of the Korean media consistently focused on ‘Ahn Chang-ho’ s daughter’ from 1960s until Susan Ahn Cuddy’s death. Even after Susan Ahn Cuddy selected as an ‘Unsung Women’, the majority of the korean media emphasized the fact that she was ‘Ahn Chang-ho’s daughter’ rather than revealing her historical nature. The Korean community in the U.S. also highlights the fact that Susan Ahn Cuddy is ‘Ahn Chang-ho’s daughter’. At the same time, they also emphasize as great American, revealing that the Korean community in the U.S. recognizes her as an example of Korean American.
