The Relationship Between Perfectionistic Self-Presentation and Social Anxiety in College Students: The Mediating Effects of Unconditional Self-Acceptance and Self-Defensive Ambivalence Over Emotional Expressiveness

초록

This study examined the mediating effects of unconditional self-acceptance and self-defensive ambivalence over emotional expressiveness on the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and social anxiety. A total of 260 college students aged 18 and above completed surveys including the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, the Korean version of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, the Unconditional Self-Acceptance Scale, and the Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 for descriptive statistics and reliability, alongside Process Macro 4.2 with bootstrapping to assess indirect effects. The findings showed that unconditional self-acceptance and self-defensive ambivalence each partially mediated the link between perfectionistic self-presentation and social anxiety. Moreover, these two factors sequentially mediated this relationship. Finally, the study discussed its implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research.
