초록

The purpose of this study is to apply attribution-affection theory (well-known for explaining the social stigma of people with mental illnesses) and the contact hypothesis to gambling addiction. This approach seeks to understand the process of social stigma towards individuals with a gambling addiction, and proposes anti-stigma strategies based on the results. Initially, the study hypothesizes that according to attribution-affection theory, perceiving the causes and control of gambling addiction as a matter of personal responsibility affects social distance, and is mediated by emotions such as pity, fear, and anger. Additionally, based on the contact hypothesis, the level of direct and indirect contact with individuals suffering from a gambling addiction influences social distance and is mediated by emotions. An online survey was conducted with 462 adults. The findings reveal that attributing greater personal responsibility results in decreased pity and heightened fear and anger, thereby increasing social distance. Fear emerged as the strongest predictor of social distance. Conversely, the results interestingly show that while higher levels of contact increase feelings of pity, thereby reducing social distance, they also increase anger, which could lead to an increase in social distance. There was no significant correlation between contact level and fear. Based on these results, we propose differentiated anti-stigma strategies for gambling addiction.
