초록

Methane(CH4) is a major greenhouse gas contributing significantly to global warming, and rice cultivation has been identified as one of the primary sources of methane emissions in agriculture. This study was conducted to clarify the effects of rice root morphological traits and rhizosphere environment on methane emission through a pot experiment in phytotron using two rice varieties(Samgwang and Sindongjin). Methane fluxes were measured using a closed chamber at different main growth stages, and plant growth, root morphology, soil redox potential, temperature, and dissolved organic carbon were measured concurrently. In both varieties, methane emissions increased sharply after panicle initiation and reached their peak values of 1.7-2.1 mg CH4 m hr at the heading stage. The cumulative methane-2 -1emission was slightly higher in Samgwang than in Sindongjin, although the difference was not statistically significant. There was no significant difference in the morphological characteristics of rice roots between the two cultivars, but they were similar to the changes in methane emission during the main growth stages. Additionally, the soil redox potential became increasingly reduced as the flooding period persisted. This suggests that the continuous flooding created favorable conditions, such as the supply of substrates for methanogens in the soil, leading to increased methane production. The findings of this study provide fundamental information for developing methane mitigation strategies in the agricultural sector through rice varieties selection and management practices.
