초록
This study examines the economic impact of the Korean space industry to propose strategic directions for advancing the emerging space economy. Since the “space industry” is not an official category in the national input–output tables, the analysis applies an exogenization approach to define and distinguish the sector along its value chain, comprising the Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream segments. Two structural scenarios are compared: a Korean model, reflecting the current manufacturing-oriented configuration, and a Global model, representing a future service-centered structure. The results indicate that the Korean model exhibits strong production capacity and high backward linkage effects, characteristic of traditional manufacturing industries. In contrast, the Global model generates relatively greater value added and employment, while displaying a stronger forward linkage effect. These findings imply that as the industry transitions from manufacturing (Upstream) toward service-based activities (Downstream), its economic function evolves from a production-driven sector to a high-value enabling platform that stimulates innovation and growth across the broader economy. Accordingly, the study recommends prioritizing the development of Downstream service capabilities to foster high-quality employment and position the space industry as a central driver of national innovation and competitiveness.
