초록

This study explores the importance and potential of art museum design that considers context by analyzing thedesign proposal for the New National Gallery in Budapest, Hungary. To achieve this, three design principles-RepresentingArchitectural Originality, Strengthening Publicness, and Securing Spatial Continuity-were derived and used as criteria to analyzehow the design proposal responds to its context. The findings reveal that the design strategy for Hungary’s New NationalGallery not only harmonizes with its urban and natural surroundings through a distinct architectural form but also functions asan open space for the public while ensuring spatial continuity beyond physical boundaries. In terms of architectural originality,the design reflects a strong sense of place by incorporating a massing concept symbolizing national identity, differentiatedexternal composition according to the city's and the park's contrasting contexts, and a facade that interacts with naturalelements. Regarding enhancing publicness, the museum strengthens its role as a public space by integrating primary entrancesthat connect the city and the park, open lobby spaces, and semi-outdoor spaces that encourage public engagement. In termsof securing spatial continuity, the design creates a seamless spatial experience through organic interior circulation, fluidindoor-outdoor transitions, and the strategic use of vertical circulation elements.
