A Study on Design Strategies through Contemporary Suburban Housing in New York- Focusing on Post-2010 Cases and a Design Proposal -

초록

(Background and Purpose) Residential architecture has long been a concentrated platform for architects to articulate their design philosophies and methodologies. In modernist architecture, suburban houses—such as Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye and Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House—have provided architects with an opportunity for experimentation, offering spatial and formal freedom detached from the dense constraints of urban life. However, as diversified lifestyles, social changes, and complex spatial demands have impacted today's residential architecture, suburban housing has also shown new spatial configurations and architectural typological transitions that go beyond modernist residential typologies' rigidity. This study aims to examine these shifts by analyzing contemporary suburban houses in New York and, more importantly, deriving theoretical principles and testing them through an actual design proposal, thereby exploring the link between research and practice. (Method) The research follows a two-step process. First, it conducts a comparative analyses of three houses in the New York suburbs designed after 2010 by New York City-based architects: Ex of IN House, Blue Dream House, and Ghent House. These are examined in terms of spatial organization systems, mediation of interior–exterior relationships, and contextual strategies in form and material. Second, the principles derived from these analyses—reconfiguration of spatial systems, reinforcement of interior–exterior mediation, and contextual articulation of form and material—were consolidated into a design framework. These principles were then applied to a specific suburban site and program in New York, allowing the study to verify how theoretical insights can be translated into a concrete architectural project. (Results) Through the comparative analysis, three core tendencies were identified. First, the reconfiguration of spatial systems enables flexible, multi-nuclear arrangements rather than fixed, compartmentalized layouts, thus creating layered and diverse residential experiences. Second, the reinforcement of interior–exterior mediation integrates natural elements—such as daylight, ventilation, vegetation, and topography—not as passive scenery but as active components of spatial composition. Third, the form and material strategy corresponding to the context enable architecture to embody severalty and continuity with its surroundings, producing an organic structure that blurs boundaries between the built and the natural environment. (Conclusions) This research moves beyond a descriptive listing of suburban housing cases to present an integrated analysis that connects spatial, environmental, and material–formal strategies to actual design application. In particular, by overcoming the rigidity of existing modern residential architecture, deriving flexibility, integration, and contextual responsiveness as core architectural principles, and concretizing them into a site-specific design proposal, the study demonstrates the practical extensibility of these strategies. Although the research area and cases are limited, the findings show a framework for rethinking suburban residential architecture in contextually grounded yet adaptable ways with the potential for broader application across diverse geographic and cultural settings.
