초록

This paper proposes ShockShot, a haptic system that incorporates a real gunpowder-based firing mechanism to deliver an immersive and realistic shooting experience in a mixed reality (MR) environment. Unlike conventional haptic devices that simulate recoil using vibration motors or electromagnetic force, ShockShot adopts the structural principles of a real firearm to provide embodied, multisensory feedback. The system synchronizes firing and reloading actions with the virtual environment, enabling integrated tactile, visual, and olfactory stimuli, including muzzle flash, smoke, and the scent of gunpowder. A shock sensor is used to precisely detect firing timing, and a six-degrees-of-freedom controller ensures accurate motion tracking and alignment with MR content. To evaluate its effectiveness, a user study (N = 17) compared ShockShot with commercially available gun-shaped haptic devices. The results demonstrated that the integration of realistic tactile, visual, and olfactory feedback significantly enhanced user immersion and satisfaction without increasing fatigue. These findings indicate that incorporating real physical mechanisms into MR systems can extend beyond conventional digital feedback, strengthening experiential realism and highlighting the potential of multisensory interaction for next-generation immersive applications. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2027.
