A Study on Research Characteristics of Fishing Village Fraternities with Social Network Analysis

초록

Fishing village fraternities represent a distinctive form of autonomous organization indigenous to Korea with vital importance in the fisheries sector. These entities serve as economic, cultural, social and environmental communities composed primarily of residents from specific geographical areas. Despite their long historical presence, they received formal legal recognition in the Republic of Korea only in the 1960s. This research applied social network analysis to bibliometric data and metadata from a representative sample of 156 academic papers published in 68 journals over a 55-year period (1970~2024). The analytical approach focused on measuring publication trends and thematic development. The findings reveal steady growth in scholarly interest, with publications largely concentrated in journals specializing in regional studies, fisheries, and historical research. The scholarly literature effectively captures the complex nature of these organizations as socioeconomic and cultural institutions integrated within their regional contexts. More recent research highlights emerging research themes including sustainable development, marine leisure, regional redevelopment, and conflict management. This study provides important insights into research patterns and understudied areas concerning fishing village fraternities. The results offer guidance for future research directions and highlight key thematic focuses, serving as an important resource for both current researchers and future scholars.
