Study on the appearance of the new word ‘romance thriller’ in the 2010s and the formation process of Korean genre novels

초록

This study analyzed the context in which the new word ‘romancethriller’ appeared. This term, which appeared in the discussionregarding the webtoon ‘Cheese in the Trap,’ is frequently used to referto cultural content with various elements. Since the 2000s, theemergence of the ‘thriller’ genre and tendency to mix the genre havebeen used in Korean movies and dramas, and the new word ‘romancethriller’ has been used in the magnetic field of this influence. Sincethen, the term has been frequently used to serve as a type of ‘fadword’ and established itself as a representative modifier referring to thecombination of various genres. However, because confusion regardingthe new word ‘romance thriller’ occurs in many layers, it is difficult totheorize it as a strict academic concept. To understand the ‘romancethriller’ as a new ‘genre,’ a more articulated discussion is needed tocomprehensively present its characteristics. In the context of the‘genre,’ the webtoon ‘Cheese in the Trap’ and web novel “RomanticThriller” were analyzed. As a result, ‘Cheese in the Trap’ is a text thatis faithful to the romance genre, using a device that makes the readerbelieve ‘thrill’ as the main content. It was confirmed that ‘thriller’ in“Romantic Thriller” is not a genre concept, but a figurative expressionthat refers to the two-sided and destructive character of ‘love.’
