Safe Base and Refugee Children: A Structural and Temporal Trend Analysis of Anglophone Academic Discourse on Refugee Children

초록

This study aims to examine how international academic discourse has understood and constructed the lives of refugee children, and to empirically identify the significance of structural conditions by employing the concept of the safe base as an analytical framework. To this end, bibliographic data from 12,570 articles were collected from Anglophone academic databases using the keyword “refugee+child’, refugee+childeren’, ‘refugee+youth’,” and analyzed through NMF topic modeling, topic semantic structure analysis, and Temporal Trend analysis. The findings reveal that refugee child research can be categorized into five major topics: (1) education in relation to social, environmental, and policy contexts; (2) access to health and mental health services and interventions; (3) immigration policy and social integration; (4) trauma, PTSD, and mental health interventions; and (5) infectious diseases, health risks, and environmental vulnerability. These results indicate that international research on refugee children has expanded across multiple domains—including education, health, policy, integration, and environmental risk—while simultaneously positioning refugee children as developmental subjects, as well as subjects of risk exposure, intervention, and integration. The analysis of topic semantic structures shows that the vulnerability of refugee children is not merely a matter of individual adaptation or capacity, but rather a structural condition formed and reproduced through constraints in social contexts and institutional access. Furthermore, Temporal Trend Analysis demonstrates a shift in international academic discourse from a focus on individual experiences toward an emphasis on structural conditions. Based on these findings, this study proposes an expanded concept of the safe base and reinterprets the lives of refugee children within broader socio-institutional contexts.
