The Relationship between Meaning in Life and Mental Health Continuum in Old Age: The Sequential Mediating Effects of Self-Compassion and Attitudes Toward Aging

초록

This study aims to improve the understanding of healthy aging and establish a foundation for developing programs and policies for the elderly. It does so by examining the sequential mediating effects of self-compassion and attitudes toward aging on the relationship between meaning in life and mental well-being in old age. To this end, the study surveyed 300 older adults nationwide, aged 60 and above, measuring demographic variables, meaning in life, self-compassion, attitudes toward aging, and mental health continuum. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS Statistics 27.0 and the PROCESS macro. The results are as follows: First, self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between meaning in life and mental health continuum in older adults. Second, attitudes toward aging partially mediated the relationship between meaning in life and mental health continuum in older adults. Third, self-compassion and attitudes toward aging sequentially mediated the relationship between meaning in life and mental well-being. Based on these findings, the study discussed its implications and limitations.
