연결어미 ‘-다고’의 통사ㆍ의미적 특성
초록
The purpose of this paper is to examine the syntactic and semantic properties of the connective ending ‘-dago'. This study assumes that ‘-dago' emerged from the omission of ‘-go ha-' in ‘-dago hago', and was gradually grammaticalized as a connective ending. The function of ‘-dago hago' is to connect an indirect quotation to the subsequent clause. During this process, the meaning related to the utterance and the temporal significance has faded, while the relational meanings such as reason or purpose, derived from sequential relationships, have been strengthened. Additionally, due to its origin as a marker for indirect quotations, ‘-dago' possesses distinctive characteristics that differentiate it from other connective endings of reason or purpose. Beyond the relational meanings of causation or purpose that connect preceding and following clauses, the connective ending ‘-dago' also reflects the speaker's attitude of acceptance towards these relationships. This paper suggests that this speaker's attitude has led to a more diverse expansion of the meanings and usages of ‘dago', and has also contributed to its function of contextual concession.
