Relationship Between Perceived Elderly Stigma and Depression among Older Adults: The Moderated Mediation Effects of Quality of Life and Self-Compassion

초록

This study examined the mediating effects of the quality of life on the relationship between perceived elderly stigma and depression among older adults and investigated whether self-compassion moderates this mediating effect. For this purpose, 250 Korean adults aged 65 and older were surveyed on their levels of perceived elderly stigma, depression, quality of life, and self-compassion. The collected data were analyzed using regression analysis and bootstrapping procedures with the SPSS PROCESS Macro. The findings were as follows. First, significant correlations were observed among perceived elderly stigma, depression, quality of life, and self-compassion. Second, quality of life partially mediated the relationship between perceived elderly stigma and depression. Third, self-compassion moderated the relationship between perceived elderly stigma and quality of life. Finally, the mediating effect of quality of life on the relationship between perceived elderly stigma and depression was moderated by self-compassion. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing the quality of life and promoting self-compassion may help reduce depression among older adults in counseling settings.
