초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze maxim mitigation expressions in the Korean Dialogue Corpus and to examine their formal characteristics and discourse functions. To this end, this study reviews relevant theoretical discussions on conversational maxims, hedges, and mitigation, and then identifies examples from the corpus. The findings of this study are as follows. First, the term ‘maxim mitigation expressions’ is adopted to refer to Korean expressions that signal in advance a speaker’s potential non-observance of Grice’s maxims of conversation. Second, through qualitative corpus analysis, this study identifies authentic instances of maxim mitigation expressions in Korean, thereby enhancing their value as empirical data for linguistic research. Third, the formal characteristics of maxim mitigation expressions are schematized according to each maxim, and it is shown that common elements such as ‘-neunde’ and ‘-jiman’ function as markers of adversative coordination in the domain of speech acts. Finally, from a discourse-functional perspective, maxim hedges are shown to be actively employed to minimize face-threatening acts between interlocutors.
