통영누비 포대기의 특징을 활용한 육아용품 디자인 개발

초록

This study aims to analyze the functional, visual, and structural characteristics of Tongyeong Nubi podaegi, a traditional Korean baby carrier, and explore its applicability to contemporary childcare product design. To this end, the dimensional changes after washing, tensile strength, and thermal insulation properties of Tongyeong Nubi fabric were measured in accordance with Korean Industrial Standards (KS) testing methods. In addition, the form, color composition, embroidery decoration, and quilting patterns of Tongyeong Nubi podaegi were examined through literature, newspaper articles, artifacts, and extant examples. The results showed that Tongyeong Nubi fabric generally exhibited superior dimensional stability and tensile strength compared to untreated cotton fabric and machine-quilted fabric. Its thermal insulation performance was also higher than that of untreated cotton fabric, confirming its potential as a material for winter childcare products. The visual and structural characteristics identified in this study included a trapezoidal cheone-type structure, a strong color contrast between a black outer fabric and a crimson lining fabric, a white trim detail known as dongjeong, central decorative lines, embroidery motifs, such as peonies, bats, and the Ten Symbols of Longevity, and both linear and square spiral quilting patterns. Based on these findings, this study proposed stroller footmuffs, baby carriers, and children’s nap bedding in two design lines: a heritage line and a modern line. This study is significant in that it transforms the functional and visual qualities of Tongyeong Nubi into contemporary childcare product designs. Moreover, it suggests expanding the application of traditional crafts into the premium childcare product market.
