『태평광기』 호랑이 서사의 윤리적 상상력과 인성교육적 함의

초록

This study examines the ethical imagination and implications for character education in tiger narratives contained in volumes 426 to 433 of Taiping Guangji. Among the 80 tiger-themed narratives in these volumes, 12 works were selected because they clearly reveal educational meanings related to moral character, ethical judgment, and social order. The study analyzes how these narratives move beyond tales of the strange and function as literary media for transmitting moral values. The findings show that the tiger narratives are structured around the ethical logic of fushan huayin, which can be expressed through two narrative patterns: rewarding good deeds and punishing evil acts. In narratives of rewarding virtue, tigers repay human kindness and confirm the value of trust, gratitude, and benevolence. In narratives of punishment, tigers expose human greed, violence, or moral failure and serve as agents of warning and correction. Through these structures, the tiger becomes a symbolic mediator that externalizes human morality and invites readers to reflect on the consequences of their actions. This study concludes that tiger narratives in classical literature can serve as valuable cultural resources for modern character education and suggests further research on other-being narratives.
