초록
This study aimed to understand aggressive behavior, which continues to appear in modern society, within a social context. Based on the Temporal Need-Threat Model, the study experimentally examined the effects of ostracism and perceived objectification on aggressive behavior. A total of 94 college students participated in the study, which employed a 2 (Ostracism: Ostracism/Acceptance) x 2 (Perceived Objectification: Present/Absent) completely randomized design. Participants experienced either ostracism or acceptance through the Cyberball game. Afterwards, they wrote a self-introduction including their strengths to prepare for a cooperative task, read self-introductions written by others, and then selected a team member. Participants then received feedback on whether the reason for being chosen by the team member was perceived as being instrumental for achieving a goal. Finally, participants played a reaction-time game with the team member, where upon losing, they chose the intensity and duration of a noise blast as a punishment to impose on the team member. The results showed significant main effects of both ostracism and perceived objectification. Participants in the ostracism/objectification-present condition selected higher noise intensity and longer duration than those in other groups, whereas those in the inclusion/objectification-absent condition chose the lowest levels of both. Based on these findings, implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
