Purpose: This study mainly identifies the level of potential defects in products that can possibly cause accidents using a risk assessment process. Moreover, strategies for preventing future accidents are suggested. Methods: A risk assessment model was devised using the Rapid Exchange of Information System (RAPEX) Risk Assessment Guideline and based on accident report data. Risk assessment was conducted for each accident report, and items with high potential risks were classified. Results: The risk assessment confirmed that among the 136 accident reports, 20 accidents were identified to have been caused by products whose level of defect could be classified as “serious risk.” Conclusion: Accident information (except sensitive information) regarding products with a level of defect classified as “serious risk” must be available as public data. Manufacturing companies are expected to provide this information to the public as part of safety management.
