Critical Realism for Interdisciplinary Research: Applications to the Study of Social Suffering

초록

Today, the absence of an adequate meta-theoretical understanding poses a significant challenge in discussions concerning interdisciplinary integration. This is because the meta-theories and methodologies of contemporary science, often divided into positivism and constructivism, tend to promote reductionist and monodisciplinary approaches to new and complex social phenomena. As a result, research often remains within condisciplinarity, rather than achieving interdisciplinarity in its genuine sense. Therefore, for effective epistemic integration, there is a pressing need to actively develop viable interdisciplinary research methodologies, as well as to reform the educational system that shapes disciplinary research practices. From this standpoint, this study examines the theoretical and methodological achievements of the project of interdisciplinarity recently developed by Roy Bhaskar and a group of critical realists. Furthermore, this research explores concrete examples of how the critical realist project of interdisciplinarity, based on the concepts of integrated pluralism and laminated systems of reality, can be applied to research practices dealing with social suffering, including disability, illness, violence, and processes of health and healing. Through this, the ultimate aim of this study is to explore the possibilities of an interdisciplinary research methodology applicable to the study of social suffering.
