초록

This study explores the multifaceted role of military animals in enhancing military morale and psychological resilience throughout history, emphasizing their impact beyond utilitarian or tactical functions. While prior research has predominantly examined the physical and operational contributions of animals in warfare, this paper investigates the profound emotional and psychological dimensions of the human–animal bond within military contexts. Through a historical-comparative analysis encompassing military dogs, warhorses, carrier pigeons, war elephants, ship’s cats, and camels, the research traces the evolution of their roles from antiquity to the modern era. It focuses on how these animals provided psychological comfort and emotional stability to soldiers, fostered camaraderie through shared experiences of danger and hardship, and served as living symbols of bravery and unity. The findings reveal that military animals acted as a “living support system,” offering soldiers not only companionship and reassurance amid the chaos of battle but also a tangible sense of purpose and responsibility. Instances where animals displayed heroism and loyalty elevated them to the status of symbolic heroes, strengthening collective identity, morale, and patriotism within military units and societies at large. The study concludes that even in the era of automation and artificial intelligence, the unique sensory perception, intuitive judgment, and emotional connectivity of animals remain irreplaceable. Recognizing and institutionalizing their psychological value—through measures such as animal-assisted therapy programs and ethical post-service welfare—can reinforce the moral foundation of modern armed forces. Ultimately, this research underscores that animals are not mere instruments of war, but enduring comrades whose presence sustains the human spirit in conditions where machines cannot.
