Allometric Equations for Estimating Carbon Stocks of Thuja occidentalis L.

초록

Thuja occidentalis L. is planted as landscape trees or garden trees in urban settlement areas. This study was conducted to developthe equations to estimate carbon (C) stocks for T. occidentalis planted in an urban settlement area. A total of 20 trees were destructivelyharvested to determine dry weight and C concentration by each tree component. The dry weight of each tree component showed anexponential relation with diameter at breast height (DBH). Carbon concentration of tree components was highest in stem wood (51.7%)and lowest in roots (42.9%). There was a positive correlation between DBH and C concentration of stem wood but no significant correlationwas found in bark, branches, leaves and roots. Allometric equations to estimate C stocks of tree components was significant with highcoefficient of determinations (R2=0.80~0.97), except for those of the leaves (R2=0.70~0.71). These allometric equations may use to estimatethe C stocks and sequestration of T. occidentalis in an urban settlement area.
