초록

Living systems have a unique mechanism for the elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from cells and that mechanism depends on superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD involves reactive oxygen species (ROS). The elimination system works by converting superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen by cyclic oxidation and reduction reaction mechanism with the help of metal ions. It depends upon the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD), or mutations affecting the enzymatic activity; this would lead to various phenotypic consequences. It is also involved in cancer cell proliferation and cell aging. In many disease pathogeneses as well as for therapeutic applications, SOD is considered as a major macromolecule. In this chapter, we will be discussing the role of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in oxygen elimination systems and the utility of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in future therapeutics. ? 2022 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
