Natalia Uvarova’s debut film <Malika>, which premiered in the ‘Vision’ section of the 2025 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and won the NETPAC Award, transcends the framework of a simple coming-of-age film to delve deeply into the cultural layers facing contemporary Central Asia and the existential struggles of individuals. Born from a multinational co-production involving Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Ireland, this film captures, through sophisticated aesthetic language, the emotional dissonance arising at the point where Islamic customs clash with modern individualism. Focusing on the critical perspective and directorial restraint demonstrated in <Malika>, this essay seeks to explore the potential of an independent female narrative that confronts the structural determinism of tradition.
