Fabrication of Silk Fibroin-based Oxygen Barrier Membrane

초록

As part of the effort to develop energy-efficient separation processes aimed at reducing high industrial energy consumption, this study focused on creating a superior oxygen barrier membrane. Unlike conventional chemical treatment methods, a composite membrane was successfully fabricated by mixing physically ground silk fibroin powder, which retains its inherent crystalline structure, with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer solution. The processing issue of bubble formation, caused by fine particles generated during the physical grinding, was effectively suppressed by washing the powder. Time-lag measurements revealed that the fabricated composite membrane formed a ‘tortuous path’ as the silk particles obstructed the gas diffusion pathway, leading to a sharp decrease in both diffusivity and solubility. Consequently, the membrane demonstrated overwhelmingly superior oxygen barrier performance compared to a pure PVA membrane, confirming its potential as an eco-friendly, high-performance barrier material.
