Antioxidant activity and cell death effect of bamboo vinegar

초록

Bamboo vinegar (BV) is a natural byproduct generated during the carbonization of bamboo and contains diverse bioactive constituents, including organic acids and phenolic compounds with reported antioxidant and anticancer potential. The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of BV and its effects on apoptosis in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Treatment of CHO cells with BV significantly reduced cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Antioxidant activity assays demonstrated notable free radical–scavenging capacity, suggesting that BV effectively modulates intracellular redox status. Cell cycle analysis showed that BV treatment increased the proportion of cells in the G0/G1 phase while decreasing the S and G2/M phase populations, suggesting induction of G1 phase arrest. Annexin V staining further confirmed that BV treatment significantly increased the proportion of apoptotic cells. In the present study, BV treatment upregulated the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax and caspase-3, indicating involvement of mitochondria-related apoptotic signaling. These findings suggest that the antioxidant activity of BV may contribute to the regulation of cellular redox status and the induction of apoptosis. These findings indicate that the potent antioxidant activity of BV plays a central role in regulating redox-sensitive apoptotic pathways. By attenuating oxidative stress and altering mitochondrial apoptotic signaling, BV effectively promotes programmed cell death in CHO cells. Collectively, this study highlights the biological significance of BV as a natural antioxidant with promising anticancer potential and provides mechanistic insight into its therapeutic applicability.
