경상방언 종결어미 ‘-는가배’의 형성과 의미·통사적 특성

초록

This study aims to investigate the formation and semantic-syntactic characteristics of ‘-neongabae’ in the Gyeongsang dialect. First, it critically examines the morphemic composition and formation process of ‘-neongabae’. In particular, it points out limitations in previous analyses that attempted to explain ‘-neongabae’ by positing the passive form ‘boe-’. Instead, this study argues that -neongabae originated from the auxiliary predicate construction ‘-neonga bo-’ combined with the hae-style sentence-final ending ‘-(eo)i’, which expresses unexpectedness or surprise, and presents evidence supporting this analysis. In addition, this study analyzes a Gyeongsang dialect corpus and shows that ‘-neongabae’ serves multiple semantic and pragmatic functions. It can express conjecture based on the speaker’s present perception or experience, convey information already known to the speaker in a non-assertive manner, and realize confirmation or emphasis when it appears as a negative rhetorical interrogative, either requesting confirmation from the interlocutor or reinforcing the speaker’s utterance. Notably, the functions of non-assertive information delivery and confirmation or emphasis occur far more frequently than the conjectural use.
