초록
This study presents an analysis of the types of complex discourse markers used in messenger conversations and the discourse strategies they realize. Although messenger-based interaction has become a major mode of communication in contemporary society, linguistic research on messenger discourse remains limited. In this regard, this study is significant in that it documents linguistic phenomena specific to messenger conversations, identifies their discourse strategies, and expands the scope of discourse marker research. In order to analyze the utterance strategies of discourse markers in messenger conversations, it is first necessary to examine the environmental factors that shape these strategies. Messenger conversations are characterized by their medium-specific features, namely asynchronous communication and colloquial written language. These features directly influence discourse structure and language use, resulting in conversational and linguistic characteristics such as irregular turn-taking, visuality and symbolic expressions, immediacy, and interactivity. Such characteristics of messenger discourse constitute the environmental conditions in which complex discourse markers are strategically employed. Because messenger conversations consist of short, message-based utterances and proceed at a rapid pace, strengthening cohesion between topics is particularly important. Moreover, the use of textual markers and emoticons often increases the distance between core topical contents, making effective topical cohesion essential for successful meaning transmission. Accordingly, speakers employ complex discourse markers that simultaneously signal the structure of topics and advance the discourse, thereby reinforcing topical cohesion and facilitating clear interpretation of utterances. As messenger conversations are text-based, nonverbal cues such as intonation, facial expressions, and gestures are absent. Consequently, speakers must explicitly express their attitudes or shifts in stance through written language. To this end, speakers use complex discourse markers to convey their attitudes toward topics and to communicate their intentions effectively. Finally, in non-face-to-face interactions, speakers seek to encourage active participation from their interlocutors and to co-construct the conversation. By drawing the listener’s attention or activating the listener’s memory, speakers strategically bind the speaker, topic, and listener together, thereby enabling effective communication.
