This paper analyzes Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem through Kenneth Burke’s theory of identification. Drawing on a Burkean rhetorical perspective, it aims to explain how Gorman’s poem could generate remarkable public resonance and persuasive power. The paper argues that the condition of division enabled the audience to receive Gorman’s message of unity more effectively. By focusing on the importance of democratic values in her poem, Gorman was able to establish identification with her audience. It further argues that Gorman’s use of the pronoun “we” works as a rhetorical device to construct a sense of shared identity and consubstantiality between the speaker and the audience. Furthermore, this essay illuminates that Gorman’s confidence and sincere presence in the public sphere could serve as nonverbal rhetorical acts. It explores the way in which the poem’s diverse rhetorical devices, such as anaphora and asyndeton, invite the audience to have collaborative participation.
