A Comparative Study of Park Je-ga’s Thought and Contemporary ESG Management: Exploring the Ideological Foundation for K-ESG

초록

This study explores the conceptual intersections between Park Je-ga’s Bukhakui (Discourse on Northern Learning, 1778) and the three pillars of modern ESG management in order to establish an indigenous philosophical foundation for a Korean-style ESG model (K-ESG). Current ESG discourse in South Korea has largely adopted international standards without sufficiently reflecting domestic cultural and structural conditions, resulting in mimetic isomorphism. To overcome this limitation, this study reinterprets the Silhak tradition of the late Joseon period as a source of practical and philosophical resources. The analysis applies three criteria: dynamic value circulation of resources for environmental responsibility, social equity and functional inclusion, and institutional transparency and accountability. The findings show that Park’s “Well Theory” provides an ideological basis for resource circulation and the modern circular economy, rather than direct ecological environmentalism. His idea of “practical benefit for the people” suggests a pre-modern model of occupational value recognition and functional inclusion related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition, “seeking truth from facts” reveals a prototype of transparent and accountable governance. This study concludes that Park Je-ga’s utilitarian philosophy can help Korean enterprises internalize ESG practices and develop a culturally grounded sustainability paradigm.
