현대국어 ‘사잇소리 현상’에 대한 음운론적 고찰

This study aimed to examine the Sai-Sori phenomena in Modern Korean from a phonological perspective. Thus far, phonological studies on the Sai-Sori phenomena have mostly been conducted from synchronic perspectives. However, existing synchronic phonological studies on the ‘Sai-Sori phenomena’ have largely focused on only a subset of word types, with only a few cases that thoroughly examine diverse explanations and sufficiently defend their validity. In consideration of these issues, Chapter 2 closely examines the various synchronic phonological accounts that have been proposed for all types of words exhibiting the ‘Sai-Sori phenomena’ and demonstrates that ‘/t/ insertion’ is the most plausible explanatory approach. However, all of the various synchronic phonological explanations proposed thus far, including the alternative presented in this study, contain certain problems from a phonological perspective. To address these problems, chapter 3 adopts a diachronic perspective to propose that words exhibiting the ‘Sai-Sori phenomena’ are formed through analogy and that the pronunciations of such words may also be regarded as stored in their underlying forms. This study may serve as an opportunity to synthesize synchronic explanations and to consider diachronic approaches together.
