The difficulty of reading Ji Haryeon’s novels has been explained with a focus on the oppressive atmosphere at the end of the Japanese colonial period. However, the possibility that the reason for the difficulty may be that the composition of her novel deviates from the way the discourse of the time is constructed can also be questioned. There is room for looking at Ji Haryeon’s novels as a metaphor for the way discourse is constructed. This study examines the aspect that Ji Haryeon’s novels question the way discourse was constructed. Ji Haryeon’s essay shows that the issue of environmental and sanctions choice in the novel is not limited to imperial policy and oppression at the end of the Japanese colonial period. Her writings include a problem consciousness of discrimination and arguments against women’s literature by male intellectuals working with the empire. Through essays, she criticizes the modern dichotomous division and hierarchical consciousness of male writers. As a female writer called according to the gender-based discrimination consciousness, her identity and the subject of the paragraph are dealt with together. Ji Haryeon’s novels (“Gyeolbyeol,” “Sangil,” and “Chehyangcho”) with women as the focus show the truth that male intellectuals who believe they are the constituent subjects of discourse according to the male/female hierarchy are actually merely bound by the discourse created by the empire, which is the upper subject. It is also a reason why the language of free women is incomprehensible to men who do not realize it. The language of exodus to be free, directed outside the discourse of new women, reveals that it cannot be heard by those inside the discourse. Men’s frostiness, dizziness, and fear in Ji Haryeon’s male foci novels (“Gaeul,” “Jongmae,” and “Yang”) are reactions to men’s loss of their place as subjects of discourse. However, they cannot exceed the freedom outside the discourse that restrains them, other imaginary thresholds. Because the voices of women (wife, sister) outside cannot be heard by them. For men, women were should not allowed to speak.
