Buddhism of the ultimate truth (dharmatā) and narrative (avadāna) Buddhism

초록

Buddhism has been classified in various ways, but I divide the main branches into Saint’s Buddhism seeking truth according to logics (yukti) and secular Buddhism seeking to reveal Buddha’s teachings as a story of the world. While the former appeals to reason, the latter appeals to emotion, and each is named ‘Buddhism of the ultimate truth (dharmatā)’ and ‘narrative (avadāna) Buddhism’. The two started differently, even if they were included in the 12 branches of Buddhism literature. This is because Abidharma literature, such as Abhidharmamahāvibhāṣā-śāstra and Abhidharmakośa-śāstra, strictly distinguishes between the two, saying that worldly stories (i.e., secular-dharmas) should not be mixed with the Saint’s dharma (i.e., tripitaka). In this paper, Buddhism was divided into the ultimate truth (dharmatā)’s Buddhism, called “Saint’s dharma” and narrative Buddhism, called “secular dharma”, and its characteristics, origins, and branches were examined.
