This paper traces the development of the Toegye Academic Lineage in the Gang-u region from the 16th to the 19th century and analyzes the characteristics of Ryu Chi-myeong's disciples in the 19th century. The Gang-u region was originally a place strongly influenced by the Nammyeong-hak school. However, in the 16th century, about 24 disciples were produced through connections with Yi Hwang (Toegye), such as marriage, friendships, or through those who sought him out due to his academic reputation. This laid the foundation for Toegye-hak in the Gang-u region, and their descendants continuously formed master-disciple relationships with key figures of the Toegye Academic Lineage. In particular, after the Injo Restoration in the seventeenth century and the subsequent collapse of the Nammyeong school in the Gang-u region, some of these descendants studied under prominent scholars such as Jeong Gu, Jang Hyeon-gwang, and Yi Hyeon-il. In the eighteenth century, through scholars such as Yi Sang-jeong and Jeong Jong-ro, the Toegye lineage in the Gang-u region further expanded, filling the academic void left by the decline of the Nammyeong school. These trends continued with Ryu Chi-myeong in the 19th century. Due to the social upheaval and Sedo politics of the time, it became difficult for Yeongnam intellectuals (sajok) to enter the central government, so they focused even more on academic pursuits within their local communities. Their scholarly aspirations manifested in approaching Ryu Chi-myeong as their teacher. Approximately 61 literary figures from the Gang-u region approached him; they included not only descendants of the existing Toegye school but also many individuals with no confirmed prior teacher-student relationships. In a region with mixed academic factions, these scholars sought out Ryu Chi-myeong, who was considered the legitimate heir to the Toegye lineage, to deepen their studies.
