This study focuses on Deurisukbaena Sukbaechum, a representative dance sequence of the Seoul Gut, to examine its negotiation with court ritual dances during the Joseon Dynasty. The Seoul Gut, a shamanic ritual developed primarily in the capital, Seoul, in the late Joseon period, demonstrates a clear connection to the court that distinguishes it from regional practices. Performed by medium shamans, the Seoul Gut combines folk improvisation with ritualized forms influenced by court culture. In particular, the repetitive footwork patterns and the forward-backward movement principles of Deurisukbaena Sukbaechum, designed to express ritual propriety, show formal similarities with court ceremonial dances, highlighting the dance as a model of Seoul Gut ritual culture. This study approaches the neglected aspects of courtly musical and symbolic elements within folk shamanic dance from the perspective of regional cultural proximity, demonstrating that Deurisukbaena Sukbaechum is not merely a transmitted folk movement but a product of ritual ideology and negotiation with court culture. By doing so, it reexamines the ritual structure and cultural-historical significance of the Seoul Gut, shedding light on the organic connection between court, folk, and shamanic traditions.
