360˚VR Experimental Study on Crime Perception in Multi-Family Housing with Piloti

This study examines how architectural characteristics (physical factors) and time of day (situational factors) influence environmental perceptionand fear of crime in piloti-type multi-family housing. An experiment using recorded virtual reality (VR) was conducted to analyze theseeffects. The results show that recessed entrances and inadequate lighting significantly increase fear of crime in ground-floor entrance spaces. The key influencing factors differ depending on the time of day. During the daytime, structural blind spots are the main concern, whereas atnight, low visibility due to poor lighting leads to greater fear of crime. The VR presence evaluation confirms that participants experiencedhigh immersion, supporting the effectiveness of VR in environmental perception studies. These findings emphasize the need for CPTEDstrategies that consider the structural characteristics of multi-family housing. They also suggest that VR-based research has the potential tosignificantly expand the scope and applicability of CPTED methodologies in crime prevention design.
