Analysis of Differences in Experiences and Perceptions of Managers Using Parental Leave

초록

The parental leave system is a crucial policy aimed at addressing the low birth rate issue. However, its utilization tends to be limited due to negative perceptions surrounding career advancement. This study examined the factors influencing the use of parental leave using data from the 2nd Korean Women Managers Panel. Additionally, it empirically analyzed the relationship between the experience of taking parental leave, the perceived convenience of the parental leave system, and promotion perceptions. The findings indicated that women were more likely to use parental leave when they had more children or were in financially stable conditions. Furthermore, compared to those who did not take leave, users of parental leave generally viewed the system as more convenient. However, they reported low satisfaction with promotions and felt a strong sense of discrimination when it came to advancement opportunities. This trend was particularly pronounced among female managers. These research results suggest that to encourage the active use of the parental leave system, it is essential to enhance the economic stability of individuals on leave and to improve the system to better support their career progression after taking leave.
